River Engage 2022:
Spreading 'One Health' Awareness through Research Methods Workshop

Rivers are vital habitats for herpetofauna and other animals. Historically, the River Valley Civilization, which began around 4000-3100 BC in places such as the Nile and Tigris Rivers, marked the beginning of the Neolithic or Young Stone Age, in which humans began to manipulate and modify their environment to cultivate crops, and abandoned their traditional style of migratory life and hunting.

To this day, we see big cities living along river lines - such as New York (Hudson), Paris (Seine), London (Thames), Bangkok (Chao Praya), and Denpasar (downstream of the Ayung River), because human beings are truly human. it would be difficult to live without a river. With growing human populations and high demand for rivers, we share this valuable resource with other species, such as reptiles and amphibians. Their role in the ecosystem is diverse, one of which is controlling rats and mosquitoes.

Unfortunately, one of the direct interactions between them and us is the contribution of our waste being carried away or deposited on the riverbanks. Until now, researchers around the world have been trying to collect waste data from banks, and for the last two years, they have been trying to understand the flow of waste from upstream to downstream and carried to the oceans. Now, you can help them understand this phenomenon by creating your own survey.

River Engage 2022 invited local citizens to take part in a series of activities to learn scientific waste survey methods to start their own macroplastic and herpetofauna survey on 2-3 April 2022 in Bali. It was a collaboration of three researchers in Indonesia, the United States, and Uganda as an effort to invite the public to understand the role and importance of protecting rivers with the scientific method, fully sponsored by the National Geographic Society. This two-day activity was followed by 15 participants, 2 trainers from IHF, 3 speakers from universities and NGOs, 6 team members, and 14 supporting organizations.
